Family and generational creativity are at the centre of JON WESLÈ’S essence. A cross-cultural affair from the shores of Sydney to the North Ghana floodplains, the brand has established roots that span continents. We speak with the brand’s founder, Darian W. Putland about JON WESLÈ'S origins.

Growing up in Australia and with South African heritage, Putland was inspired by her mother and aunt’s creativity when founding the brand. She says, “JON WESLÈ serves as a vessel for my imagination, echoing the influences of my creative Mom and Auntie. Their influence has enriched my eye for fashion, textiles and art. I'm thrilled to reveal their creativity that up until now has been a cherished family secret for the past 50 years.”

This familial creative learning and the blend of cultural elements was paramount in crafting the JON WESLÈ launch collection. Putland says, “You'll discover a delicate interplay of distinct cultural nuances and design influences that symbolise our signature ethos. The vision and aesthetic I had for the brand is the artful fusion of textures, seamlessly intertwining the richness of leathers with the natural materials. These tactile pieces and objects are a manifestation of my personal admiration for this harmonious amalgamation.”

JON WESLÈ’S creations stand as a testament to the delicate balance between respected traditions and contemporary sophistication. The embodiment of this philosophy is the reimagining of conventional techniques through a lens of modern elegance. “It's an ode to the timeless allure of cultural heritage,” says Putland, “and a tribute to the artistic legacy that has flourished across the African continent for countless generations. At its core, our collection resonates with the appreciation of Africa’s artistry, brilliantly brought to life on a grander canvas for our conscious community to embrace.”

As much as in practice as in metaphor, the makers’ stories are truly imbued in the warp and the weft of each collection piece. “Through our designs, we don't merely adorn, but rather narrate the essence of Ghana's cultural legacy,” Putland says. “This thoughtful approach imparts a sense of authenticity that resonates with our community, encapsulating the very spirit of the craftsmanship that birthed it.”
